A campaign was started on the hill for the sale of Defense Bonds and Stamps among College faculty and students on January 23, 1942. The defense program of Mary Washington College is sponsored by the Student Government Association with Dr. Edward Alvey acting as advisor. In launching the defense program, a Victory Booth was erected outside the College Shoppe where students can come and make their purchases of Bonds and Stamps at any time during the day. A special convocation program was planned for the initiation ceremony, and a group from the radio broadcasting class discussed informally the meaning of defense Bonds and Stamps and how the success of such a program lies in the support and cooperation of each student on the campus. The first day sale netted $60. Text Any textual data included in the document CAMPUS INAUGURATES SALE OF WAR BONDS AND STAMPS FOR ITS SECOND YEAR The Victory Booth was reopened in front of the College Shoppe on October 9, 1942. Again the defense program was sponsored by Student Government Association. A Chapel program under the direction of Student Government consisted of patriotic songs played by the Mary Washington College Band; a short skit, and quartet singing under the direction of one of the students. In order that many students might have the chance to participate in the sale of United States War Bonds and Stamps, the Student Council divided the activities into six separate committes. All groups functioned under the direction of the Supervising Committee consisting of Student Council members. The committees designated were: Art Committee, whose function was to make posters, placards and plans for the sale of Christmas Cards containing stamp albums. The Organization Committee was in charge of organizing volunteers for regular duty at the stamp booth. The Publicity Committee had as its main duty the constant promotion of War Stamps and Bonds on the hill. The Radio Committee publicized the sales by weekly announcements over the M.W.C. radio program hour. The Bullet is joining the Associated Collegiate Press and the Collegiate Digest in promoting the sale of War Bonds and Stamps on the college campus by sponsoring the NATIONAL BOND QUEEN CAMPAIGN here at Mary Washington. The contest runs for five weeks, beginning February 15 and ending March 19, 1943. Nominations will be taken in the dining room Saturday night and students may be added to the list up until 5:00 p.m. Sunday night. (see Editor). The local candidates are to be nominated on the basis of beauty and popularity alone. The candidates may be nominated by any student or organized group or faction. Their class standing has nothing to do with the contest. (However Mary Washington College can combine beauty and brains in her Bond Queen!) Students and faculty may vote for their candidate or their choice on or after February 15 and up to and including March 19, at the Stamp Booth at the time of a purchase of a stamp or bond. Each ten cent stamp entitles the purchaser to ten votes, each twenty-five stamp to twenty-five votes, etc. If you bought a bond that would entitle you to 1,875 votes and you could stuff the ballot box. The girl receiving the greatest number of votes at the end of the five weeks will be your Campus Bond Queen. In case of a tie, the Bullet staff will select the winner. The winner here will have her picture sent to the Associated Collegiate Press and will be entered in the national contest. The semi-finalists in this group, five per cent of the total entries will be selected by a group of professional photographers on the basis of photogenic qualities. The Bond Queen will be selected from this field by the same judges and she will be presented with a $50.00 War Bond by the Associated Press and Collegiate Digest. Pictures of the semi-finalists will appear in Collegiate Digest and the Bond Queen will have her picture on the cover of Collegiate Digest the following issue. Be thinking who you want to nominate! Dr. Combs said that this was a joint metting of faculty and students—a get-together before the holiday season. "We should be glad that we live in America which is the greatest and richest land on earth," said Dr. Combs. "The most important thing is morale. Many nations in this present war have been defeated be- cause of hysteria and lack of emotional control. We remember the roads in France were so blocked that the armies could not move." He urged one and all to use their head in this emergency and then Dr. Combs referred to the position that Greece occuped with so few modern firearms and said that she was able to resist so long against such a powerful enemy because of the attitude and morale of the people. In World War No. 1 President Wilson said, "Keep the road to the schoolhouse open." President Roosevelt has sent out a message to all colleges in the United States urging the students to stay in college during this emergency. He stressed the necessity for college students to take advantage of this opportunity to better prepare themselves for the greater task of peace-making. At the same time, time, he said that he had offered the services of this institution, the staff and the student body, to do any work or any task that they were invited to do, and added that if there were students available here who could do a certain job better than anyone else could do it, then, of course, that was their mission. "Don't be discontented," he said, "because you cannot take up a rifle. Your place is just as important." Dr. Combs said he wants to hear fun and laughter on the campus. 'I don't want to see long and gloomy faces." He said that he liked the plan suggested this week by a group reducing the formality and expense of our social pro- gram. Whenever a dance is planned on the hill in the future, a definite percentage of the intake will be donated to the service plan for the college. "This tragedy has made us appreciate our country more than ever before and our opportunities, too. It will make us a better people in years to come. We are here to help students work out any problems that they may have because of this emergency and we ask the facility who are doing an excellent job today to do an even better one tomorrow that we may all increase our efficiency and unity." The college is preparing a plan on which the student body and faculty will work as a unit. Dr. Alvey, dean of the college, following Dr. Combs' address enumerated our opportunities for service here on the hill. He said that the shortage of teachers alone this year would be 60,000. Many other fields are calling for thousands more. He said he understood the opportunity to make a higher wage by way of a short cut was a temptation, but in the adjustment later that a person who left his education unfinished will not be able to hold his place against the greater competition to follow. Dr. Alvey mentioned among the other services, the Red Cross Relief Fund, First Aid training classes for all, Red Cross knitting classes, sewing, continued relief to our allies, and urged us not to forget the needy at home. The student body, several times a year, collects clothes for different organizations, sends Christmas stockings, dinner baskets, canned foods from the Y.W.C.A. and in other ways aid in keeping "the home fires burning."
